What happened
Piston rings were renewed during an inspection, which looked like the right action. Within months, the new rings showed accelerated wear and multiple breakages.
Root cause, via CCM liner calibration
The liner had developed significant ovality and lost circularity. The new rings could not seat, blow-by increased, wear became uneven and ring life collapsed.
Key lesson
The liner dictates how well rings perform. A worn or oval liner means recurring costs, higher CLO consumption and risk of engine damage. Honing or replacement is often essential for a long ring life.
